Stephen Prothero thinks of us as a nation of rabbis, always grappling with our core texts, songs and sayings, trying to figure out what they say about the American experiment. He calls this canon America’s secular scriptures, and includes texts large and small, from the Constitution and Ronald Reagan’s “Rendezvous with Destiny” speech to “This Land is Your Land.”
